Prior to earning her doctorate in curriculum and instruction, Professor McCool was an environmental educator and taught elementary school in Anchorage, Alaska, where she served as assessment coordinator, mentor teacher and site-based specialist. She has supervised numerous pre-service teachers and coached new university supervisors, co-facilitated the Curry Leadership Academy for administrators, instructional coaches and teacher leaders, and designed place-based curriculum materials to support the teaching of local history. At Sweet Briar, Professor McCool teaches courses focusing on content area methods, curriculum design and action research. Her academic interests include oral history, place-based education, service learning and rural education. When she’s not in the classroom, Professor McCool enjoys quilting, hiking with her miniature poodle, O. Henry, and a good old-fashioned family road trip.
