Sweet Briar College student-athletes Kiley Jolicoeur and Maddy Widjaja were named 2015 ZAG Field Hockey/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III Scholars of Distinction earlier today.

This comes a day after the National Academic Team and Individual awards were announced, which included the Sweet Briar team and seven individual athletes from Sweet Briar, among them Jolicoeur and Widjaja.

“I am proud of these women for leading the team in academic excellence. When not on the field, they are hitting the books, meeting with professors or, as is often the case at Sweet Briar, getting their hands dirty in our 3,250-acre outdoor classroom,” head coach Hannah Lott said.

The Scholars of Distinction award is presented to field hockey players who maintained a 3.9 cumulative GPA or higher during the fall 2015 semester.

Jolicoeur is a junior from Lovell, Maine, with majors in philosophy and classics and a minor in creative writing.

“Kiley is always applying what she learns in the classroom to our conversations about team and life,” Lott said. “She is a hard worker and a smart woman. We are glad that Kiley is a leader on the Sweet Briar field hockey team.”

Widjaja is a chemistry major and first-year from Los Angeles, whose excitement for learning “always floors me,” Lott said.

“She’s always running up to me with a container of whatever insect she is studying from ladybugs to molting sphingidae caterpillars.”

In total, only 10 ODAC field hockey players and 191 players nationally were awarded the honor this year.
