Diane Dale Reiling ’73 has been named Sweet Briar’s Outstanding Alumna of 2013. The award will be presented at the annual Alumnae Association Reunion Luncheon Celebration during Reiling’s 40th Reunion in May.
Reiling earned her degree in French studies and went on to successful sales careers in the airline industry, including 17 years with Federal Express, and in real estate. She and her husband, Charles “Chuck” Reiling, worked as a real estate sales team in the Bellevue, Wash., area before retiring to Medford, Ore., in 2011.
The Outstanding Alumna Award is given for volunteer service to the College, and Reiling has more than earned the distinction. She served on the Alumnae Association Board from 2006 to 2009 and as its representative to the College’s board of directors during those years. She became a member of the local Sweet Briar Club as soon as she moved to Washington in 1989, then served as president of the Washington State Alumnae Club for 15 years, hosting multiple events each year. Once in southern Oregon, Reiling inaugurated a Sweet Briar Day luncheon in Ashland as well.
Reiling also has been active in fundraising, including as class fund agent. She served on the Boxwood Circle Committee for five years and spearheaded the Reunion Gifts Committee for the last three Class of 1973 reunions.
Reiling says she is thrilled to receive the award, noting the company it puts her in and the common cause they work for.
“I have been inspired by many of the women who are previous recipients of this award,” she says. “Over the last forty years, I have been fortunate to know and work with many of them because of our shared love for this College. I am honored to join their ranks!”
The Outstanding Alumna Award was established in 1968 by then-President Anne Gary Pannell as “The Sweet Briar College Alumna Award in Honor of the Class of 1910.” Nominations are invited from any member of the Sweet Briar family to recognize extraordinary volunteer contributions by alumnae who graduated at least 15 years ago.
