IHSA season is underway

Sweet Briar’s 2015-16 Intercollegiate Horse Show Association team roster is set and the riders are already seeing competition in the ring.

Vixens competed in the pre-season Tournament of Champions on Sept. 19, finishing eighth out of 18 teams. Individually, Makayla Benjamin ’18 was reserve champion in the medal, a special class for open riders in which the top 10 riders on the flat are invited back to jump a special course. Benjamin was then called back for a three-way ride-off to decide the winners.

In other individual placements, Benjamin finished second in open fences and fifth in open flat; Madi Cromwell ’16 was second in novice flat; Courtney Barry ’18 was fourth in novice fences; Emily Schlosberg ’19 was fourth in intermediate fences; and Megan Shuford ’16, in her very first horse show, was fifth in the walk/trot division. Also competing for the Vixens were Julia Rhinehart ’18 in intermediate flat and Cassie Fenton ’18 in advanced walk, trot, canter.

The IHSA season officially opened Saturday, Sept. 28, at Randolph College. In that competition, Benjamin earned reserve high-point honors with a first-place finish in open fences and second in open flat. Fenton won her advanced walk, trot, canter class; Schlosberg second in novice flat and fourth in intermediate fences; Maddie Coleman ’16 was third in novice fences; Marina Biel ’18 was third in advanced walk, trot, canter; Shuford was fourth in walk, trot; Barry was fourth in novice fences and novice flat; Emily Hawk ’18 was fourth in beginning walk, trot, canter; Rhinehart and Katrina Matz ’17 were both fifth in intermediate flat; and Olivia Fabian-Slocum ’17 finished sixth in open flat.

Following team tryouts on Sept. 11-13, 28 riders were named to the IHSA team, among them 10 seniors, four juniors, 10 sophomores and four first-years. They are pictured above.
