Chris Bobbe, Haverford College

JYF Spring 2016

Major(s): English
Minor(s): French

Why did you choose JYF in Paris?
I was looking for the most immersive language program possible, and JYF was a great option for that.

What and where did you study while in Paris?
Histoire de l’art du XIXe et XXe siècles (Sweet Briar, JYF in Paris)
Grammaire et syntaxe avancées (Sweet Briar, JYF in Paris)
Sémantique (Université de Paris 3- Sorbonne Nouvelle)
Internship for a film production company called La Luna Productions.

Were your courses approved to count for your major(s) or Minor(s)?
Two of them counted as French credits (semantics and art history), but the department was initially hesitant about art history. (It’s a good idea to check with your French department before you choose classes.)

What were the best parts of the experience for you?
I loved my internship translating screenplays and subtitles at La Luna Productions. The content was varied and fascinating, and I loved the process of translation.

What was your greatest challenge?
Staying adventurous! Try and do one or two new things almost every day so you make the most of your time in Paris 🙂

What advice would you give to future students?
If you can, travel to other cities and countries! But be sure to plan far enough in advance.
