The Office of Institutional Effectiveness is the College’s official source for all institutional data (e.g., student enrollment, employee counts) and coordinates the collection and reporting of data for external and internal purposes. In order to ensure the accuracy and consistency of institutional data supplied to external sources or used for internal decisions, requests for institutional data should be filtered through the Office of Institutional Effectiveness.
The Office of Institutional Effectiveness also coordinates all research activity pertaining to students, faculty, staff, alumnae, or other campus community members. Research (e.g., surveys, focus groups, interviews) requiring widespread involvement of Sweet Briar students, faculty, staff, alumnae, or other campus community members are subject to review and must be cleared prior to administration by the Office of Institutional Effectiveness. Several types of research are excluded from this process, including: course-related surveys of students for the sole purpose of providing feedback to individual instructors; evaluations of programs or services provided immediately following the program or service; and faculty and student research.
The purpose of this policy is to ensure that research conducted under the auspices of Sweet Briar College is compatible with the College’s mission; conforms to sound research practices; and minimizes the burden placed on research participants.
Individuals proposing to conduct research should contact the Office of Institutional Effectiveness.
Important note: This process does not replace the role of the Research on Human Subjects Committee in ensuring that research proposals meet with appropriate federal, state and local regulations.
Assistance with Surveys
The Office of Institutional Effectiveness is pleased to provide assistance with the wording and distribution of surveys (or the conducting of interviews or focus groups) along with the collection and interpretation of results. Professional Code of Ethics
In all of its activities, the Office of Institutional Effectiveness will ensure the confidentiality of information and that information is released only to appropriate individuals and groups in accordance with applicable federal and state laws.
The office adheres to the Association for Institutional Research (AIR) Code of Ethics in all its undertakings. The AIR Code of Ethics is available here.
