Campus Climate Assessment

In October 2021, we announced that Sweet Briar College would be undertaking a campus climate assessment.

In making the announcement, President Woo wrote: ” ‘Community’ is a term we often use at Sweet Briar. We use it to describe the people of this campus as a group collectively engaged in living, working and learning together. It conveys a sense of family. It’s a powerful word and we want to be sure that it rings true for everyone. We want our campus to be a place where everyone feels welcomed, accepted and an integral part of the whole. We want our campus environment to be characterized by openness, fairness and equal access for all.

We have partnered with Rankin & Associates Consulting, one of the foremost firms doing this kind of work. They have conducted more than 200 campus climate assessment projects over the last 20 years. If you’d like to learn more about the project, we invite you to take a look at this presentation from Rankin & Associates.

Working with Rankin & Associates is the Climate Assessment Working Group, a group of faculty, staff and students who have already begun their work and will meet monthly throughout the process.

You might be wondering how this work will impact you.

In the short term, you may be asked to participate in a small discussion group. Those discussions will take place in early 2022 and your input will be invaluable as Rankin & Associates puts together their final report. In the longer term, because this work will help us build a more inclusive campus, we anticipate that everyone on campus will benefit.

If you have questions about this project, please reach out to Dean Kerry Greenstein or Professor Dwana Waugh.
