Applied Computer Science with Google

Google LogoJoin us to learn the basic skills and tools necessary to build a web application for the mobile devices that dominate the modern era. You will study the important theoretical and practical concepts at the base of cloud computing and learn the tools and best practices of software development. You will leverage App Engine and its application programming interfaces (APIs) — the framework that exposes to developers around the world the power of Google’s cloud — to create your own web apps.


This course is open to Sweet Briar undergraduate students and female undergraduate students from VFIC institutions. Female students from other institutions by invitation.

Prerequisite: CSCI 125: Introduction to Computer Science or an equivalent introductory course to computer science and programming.

This course is not recommended for students who have taken computer science courses more advanced than CSCI 126: Data Structures or equivalent.

Meeting Information and Important Dates

Course Dates: May 14-18, 2018

Class Meetings: 10 a.m. – noon, 1 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Important Dates:

  • May 13 — Residence halls open at 4 p.m.
  • May 14 — First day of class
  • May 15 — Last day to drop class
  • May 18 — Last day of class
  • May 19 — Residence halls close at 8 a.m.


Total cost is $350 for residential students (including full room and board) and $42.50 for day students (including all lunches).

Registration and Payment

Register below by midnight on Sunday, April 22. All fees must be paid in full at the time of registration. Unpaid registrations will be disregarded until/unless such time as full payment is received. Students will not be billed. Space is limited to 20 students.

Honor Code and Academic Rules

All enrolled students, regardless of their home institution, are expected to maintain high standards of conduct, both in and outside the classroom. The Sweet Briar Honor Code is in effect during the summer session. Any student who commits or observes a violation shall contact Germán Hoguín Londoño or the dean’s office.

Cancellation Policy

Sweet Briar College reserves the right to cancel classes due to insufficient enrollment. If a course is canceled, students will be notified by email and full refunds will be issued.
