Why study history?
Rooted in knowledge of both humanities and the social sciences, history is fundamental to a liberal arts education. Historians gain understanding of our complex world by examining how and why human experiences change over time. By analyzing the past to discern why cultures developed as they did, students prepare to become informed, thoughtful and engaged citizens of the present.
Why study history at Sweet Briar?
A closely-knit learning community, the history program at Sweet Briar is vibrant and supportive — even as faculty is committed to the value of a rigorous education. Many of our students enroll in honors programs to construct independent research projects and delve deeply into specific topics. Students complete internships at institutions where they apply their knowledge to projects that advance the goals of the sponsoring organization. A substantial number of history majors choose to study for a semester or academic year abroad to enrich their understanding of what they have learned at Sweet Briar.
What can you do with a history major?
There is no single career path for history majors. Instead, the rigorous research and writing requirements prepare those who study history for a broad range of careers that include law, journalism, politics and policy, technical writing, administration, public relations, teaching and management consulting. Recent graduates are in law school and pursuing Ph.D. degrees in the UK and at elite universities in the U.S., including Johns Hopkins and Georgetown.
