Gager Concert Series Presents Music to Lunch ByJENNIFER McMANAMAY The Sweet Briar College Janet Lowrey Gager Community Concert Series will present its final installment of 2007-08, “The Music of Spain,” at noon Tuesday, April 1 at Memorial Chapel. Associate professor of music Nicholas Ross will play several pieces from Suite espanola by Isaac Albeniz. Gretchen McDonough, a senior voice student whose minor is in Spanish, will perform Manuel de Falla’s “Siete Canciones Populares,” accompanied by adjunct piano instructor Anna Billias. Rounding out the program will be guitar instructor Rafael Scarfullery performing guitar pieces by Enrique Granados, Fernando Sor, Francisco Tárrega and Joaquín Malats. The Gager series is supported by Forrest Gager in memory of his wife, Janet, a former public relations director at the College. During the past three seasons the concerts featured music from around the world, but that is changing, says the series’ director, Rebecca McCord. “This concert, ‘The Music of Spain,’ will be the last in the world music series,” Professor McCord said. Although she greatly enjoyed planning the series around the music of the different countries, “Next year we are going to be theme-less,” she said. The noontime concert is informal and will be about 50 minutes long, allowing faculty, staff and students time to enjoy the music over their lunch hour. Attendees are welcome to bring a bag lunch.
