Sweet Briar Professor Emeritus Performs Voice Recital Feb. 27JENNIFER McMANAMAY Vocalist Allen Huszti, Sweet Briar College professor emeritus of music, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27 in Memorial Chapel. The baritone singer will be accompanied on piano by SBC associate professor of music Nick Ross. Huszti, who taught voice at Sweet Briar for more than 30 years, is returning to campus as a guest artist for the first time since his retirement in 2005. The evening’s program includes Beethoven, Robert Schumann, Ralph Vaughan Williams and George Butterworth, and will feature several less frequently performed works that may be new to listeners. Butterworth, in particular, is a British composer whose works are often forgotten, according to Ross. Huszti will perform from Butterworth’s “Six Songs from A Shropshire Lad,” which the composer based on the poems of E.A. Houseman. Also on the program are songs from Vaughan Williams’s opera, “The Pilgrim’s Progress,” and Schumann’s “Liederkreis, Op. 24,” based on the poems of Heinrich Heine. Schumann wrote the song cycle in what became known as his “year of song,” a burst of creativity thought to have been inspired by his engagement to Clara Wieck Schumann, whom he married in September 1840.
Admission to the recital is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact Ross at or 381-6121.
