Raffle tickets for this quilt and matching pillow covers will be sold to benefit Sweet Briar’s Relay For Life team. The handmade queen/king quilt was donated by Casual Quilters Club, which spent eight months making the quilt specifically for the raffle.
SBC Relay For Life Team Needs Your HelpFrom staff reports For the third year, Sweet Briar College is fielding a team for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. The Amherst County event is scheduled for May 9 and 10 at Amherst County High School. The Sweet Briar team’s goal is to raise $3,500, so they are holding a series of fundraisers. There will be a silent auction April 16 through 18 in the Prothro atrium. To participate, you can either donate an item for auction or bid on a donated item. Raffle tickets will be sold — $5 each or three for $10 — for a handmade queen/king quilt and two pillow covers. The quilt was donated by Casual Quilters Club, which spent eight months making the quilt specifically for the raffle. Raffle tickets will be on sale during lunch on Tuesdays in the Prothro atrium. The drawing will be held May 9. Plants will be for sale at the Relay For Life event. To help the team, you can donate or purchase plants. For a $10 or $25 donation, luminaries can be purchased in honor of a survivor or in memory of someone who lost their battle with cancer. At a special ceremony on May 9, the candles will be lit. They burn throughout the night as a reminder of the purpose for Relay For Life. Monetary donations can be made to team members or by using your Food Lion MVP card. You must register your card first, and then a portion of the money you spend at Food Lion will be donated to the Amherst Relay For Life. To register your card, go to http://www.foodlion.com using Internet Explorer, or call (704) 633-8250, Ext. 3810. On Food Lion’s Web site, do the following: go to “Fundraising,” click on “Register MVP Card,” click on “Select Organization,” select state, select city (choose Lynchburg because of office location), select “Relay For Life of Amherst” as the organization, hit “OK,” fill in MVP information (be sure to use all 12 numbers) and follow directions on the next screen. To make donations for the auction or plant sale, to purchase a luminary or for more information, contact Cindy Sale (Ext. 6201) or Coleen Catalon (Ext. 6186). The Sweet Briar Community has been touched deeply by cancer. Relay For Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported and that one day cancer will be eliminated.
