Grab the Mic for United WaySUZANNE RAMSEY So you think you can sing, huh? Do you stand in front of the mirror, hairbrush in hand, singing 80s tunes at the top of your lungs? Or maybe you’ve secretly dreamed of a venue for your Shakespearian soliloquy or comedy routine. Now is your chance. From 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, the president’s office will host an “open mic” in support of 2007 United Way Campaign. The event will be held in the Vixen Den and will include a 50/50 raffle with proceeds benefiting the United Way of Central Virginia. Admission is free. Several members of the Sweet Briar community have already said they will perform. Tim and Debbie Kasper will perform acoustic folk/rock music and Doreen McVeigh ’09 and Katherine Boltz ’10 will Irish step dance to Celtic music performed by Laura Pharis and Bo Hughes on fiddles, Michelle Raymond ’09 on drum and Joe Malloy on guitar. If you’d also like to showcase your talent — or lack thereof, whichever the case may be — e-mail the president’s office at president@sbc.edu or Natalie Batman ’08 at batman08@sbc.edu . The United Way Campaign kicked off in September with a goal of raising $13,000 by Nov. 19. As of Oct. 30, the Sweet Briar community had met more than 89 percent of the goal. There also will be a silent auction Nov. 13 in Prothro. For more information on the United Way Campaign, contact Karen Summers (Ext. 6230, ksummers@sbc.edu), Pam Simpson (Ext. 6443, psimpson@sbc.edu) or Lynn Canada (Ext. 6145, acanada@sbc.edu).
