Gene Gotwalt, assistant professor of economics, received a grant recently from Omnicron Delta Epsilon, the economics honor society. The $1,375 grant will be used to provide small — less than $20 — incentives to students who participate in a fall research project.

According to Gotwalt, the project involves the study of social capital, or “the value that we get from working with other people instead of working in competition with other people. … You don’t steal your neighbor’s newspaper in the morning. You get your own subscription. Things like that.”

Economics majors Jessica McCarthy ’08, Diana Simpson ’08, Cynthia Roden ’10 and Julie Midgley ’08 will be conducting the experiments, “doing the statistical analysis and working very hands-on,” Gotwalt said.

The project will begin this month and continue through October.
