In late October, it was scary how much attention Sweet Briar’s annual ghost tours got from the local media.

The Amherst and Lynchburg papers, including The Burg — Lynchburg’s entertainment tabloid — ran stories about the tours, and WSET’s Ishmael LaBiosa came out and previewed the ghost tours for “Good Morning Virginia.”

According to Sweet Briar Museum director Christian Carr, the publicity worked. Between Oct. 25 and 31, more than 330 people took ghost tours, and $1,200 was raised for the museum.

“I think this success can be attributed in part to the clement weather we enjoyed, but more directly to the efforts of college relations, especially the television segments on Good Morning Virginia and the six o’clock news on WSET, and the sidebar in the Washington Post,” Carr wrote in an e-mail.
