Boycott Prothro for Make-A-Wish Nov. 14

From staff reports

Sweet Briar College’s business management lab will host a dining hall fast on Wednesday, Nov. 14 in support of the Make-a-Wish Foundation, an organization that grants wishes to seriously ill children.

At the fast, the students hope to raise about $3,000. For participants with meal plans, the money that Prothro uses to feed them that day will go to Make-A-Wish. Those who do not have a meal plan are asked to pay $5 to participate.

Don’t worry about going hungry, though. Breakfast (8 to 10 a.m.) and dinner (5 to 7 p.m.) will be offered in Reid Pit. Details are still in the works, but food for these meals will be provided by the business lab or local restaurants.

The event is one of several planned for this fall to raise money and awareness for Make-A-Wish. On Oct. 18, the class raised about $500 at a Halloween-themed benefit concert; on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, a jail-a-thon was held in the lower quad, and on Nov. 13, there will be a fashion show and silent auction to benefit Make-A-Wish.

In addition to raising funds and awareness, planning the series of events provides real-world experience for the business students.

“Each of these projects involves the students on the event team adopting a mission statement and goals for their event and a set of measurable objects,” Tom Loftus, assistant professor of business, said earlier this fall.

“They need to find a date, come up with a budget, secure the necessary donations and permissions, design and implement a marketing plan and final assessment, as well as a detailed accounting of funds received and expended.

“They also complete a final handbook and report on their event, which serves as a resource for future management labs. It can seem pretty overwhelming at times.”
