Artist in SBC Permanent Collection Wins MacArthur Prize

From staff reports

Rebecca Massie Lane, SBC art galleries director, took a moment during her sabbatical this semester to note that another artist in Sweet Briar’s Permanent Collection has been awarded a MacArthur Fellowship.

Painter Joan Snyder, 67, lives in Brooklyn, N.Y. Her abstract paintings show experimentation with new techniques and materials, including broad brush strokes over pencil-drawn grids and canvases that incorporate text and found objects.

Through its Fellows Program the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation awards five-year unrestricted fellowships to individuals across all fields who “show exceptional merit and promise of continued creative work.”

According to its Web site, the MacArthur Fellowship is a “ ‘no strings attached’ award in support of people, not projects.”
