Coach Ian McCartney’s riders won the team championship at the Bridgewater College Intercollegiate Horse Show Association show on Saturday, Oct. 29. The Vixens dominated the competition with 37 points. Second place went to Bridgewater with 25 points. Washington and Lee and James Madison University tied for third with 24 points.
Sweet Briar was led by Olivia Smith ’14 and Sarah Hibler ’14, who swept the open and intermediate classes respectively. Their double blue efforts, along with first-year Kathryne Richard’s win in the novice flat class put the Vixens over the top.
Hibler and Smith capped off the day, vying against one another for the individual high-point champion title. In a very close ride-off between the two, Smith took the honors with Hibler finishing in reserve. Also competing for the team were Katie Bradshaw ’15, Laura Leitch ’14 and Kaitlin Schaal ’15.
Sweet Briar’s win catapulted them to the top of the point standings in the highly competitive Zone 4 Region 2, with 91 points. A close second is Bridgewater College with 89 points. Lynchburg College is in third with 85 points, Hollins University is in fourth with 80 points, JMU is in fifth with 56 points, Washington and Lee is in sixth with 51 points, and Randolph College is in seventh with 45 points.
Smith also is leading in point standings for the Cacchione Cup with 24 points. Following Smith is Hollins University’s Emma Lane Poole with 21 points, then Kelly Gerland from Lynchburg College with 20 points.
Sweet Briar will host the next IHSA competition at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12 at Rogers Riding Center. Spectators are welcome.
Hibler snags individual championship at Randolph
Sarah Hibler was the high-point rider in an earlier competition at the Randolph/Lynchburg College Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Show hosted by Randolph College in October.
Class winners include Katie Drake ’14 in her first IHSA show in novice fences, Laura Leitch ’14 in advanced walk trot canter and Hibler in intermediate fences and flat.
Other standings include: Olivia Smith ’14, third in open flat; Ali Davidson ’13, sixth in open flat; Kathryne Richard ’15, fifth in novice fences and sixth in novice flat; Laura Jane Wolcott ’12, second in beginner walk trot canter; and Kaitlin Schaal ’15 competed in walk trot.
