Two Sweet Briar riders competed in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Zone 4 finals, held April 10 at Bridgewater College, and one of them is going to the IHSA national championships in Lexington, Ky., next month.

Olivia Smith ’14 finished as the Zone 4 champion in the individual intermediate flat class, qualifying for a berth in the nationals at Kentucky Horse Park from May 5-8. Smith also rode in individual over fences.

Sissy Winstead ’12 also competed in the Zone 4 championships in the individual walk trot class, having qualified for the spot in the regional finals.

This year also marked the first time that the Zone 4 offered U.S. Hunter Jumper Association Affiliate Equitation Awards.

The awards reach across all four regions that make up the zone to recognize the top riders in three categories: the novice division (flat and fences), intermediate division (flat and fences) and a mixed division (any flat and any fences). Awards were based on the point totals that each rider earned in her five best regular-season IHSA shows.

Two SBC riders were recognized with these awards. Catherine Marcks ’14 placed 10th in the intermediate division and Smith placed second in the mixed division.
