Sweet Briar Riders Qualify for National Show

| April 13, 2012
The Sweet Briar riding program is sending two riders to compete for national championships at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association finals. The show will be held May 3-6 at the Hunt Horse Complex in Raleigh, N.C.

On Saturday, April 7, three Vixens competed in the Zone 4 finals — the qualifiers for the national show — at Goucher College in Baltimore. Sarah Hibler ’14 took home the individual intermediate flat title and Kathryne Richard ’15 was the individual novice flat champion. With their wins, each earned the opportunity to compete for the IHSA national titles in their respective classes.

Olivia Smith ’14 also showed well in zones, placing fourth in the individual open flat. Only the top two riders in each class advance, however.

It was a good year for coach Ian McCartney’s IHSA team, which finished the regular season as reserve champions in the highly competitive Region 2. Having individual riders advance to the next level capped off the successful team effort.

“Taking three riders to zones is an accomplishment, especially considering we ride in one of the toughest regions in the country,” McCartney said. “All three worked hard all year to get where they are and have been extraordinary teammates.”
