A Lynchburg man drowned Tuesday night after his boat capsized in the upper lake at Sweet Briar College.
Ronald Lee Ferguson, 56, of Lynchburg and Gary D. Gillispie, 43, of Rustburg fell into the water after one of the men stood in the boat, causing it to tip over, said Lee Walker, outreach director for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, which is investigating the incident. Gillispie was able to swim to shore, but Ferguson apparently drowned. According to officials, no life jackets were in the boat.
Rescue crews from the Amherst County Sheriff’s Office, Amherst County Public Safety, Monelison Rescue Squad and Amherst Life Saving and First Aid Crew were called to the scene shortly after 9 p.m. Sweet Briar personnel, the Lynchburg Fire Department and Virginia State Police Dive Team also responded to assist.
Ferguson’s body was recovered around 2 a.m. Wednesday and taken to Lynchburg General Hospital. The medical examiner’s office will make a final determination on the cause of death.
