New library wing open for business

Nina Peck ’14 (from left), Virginia Whitfield ’17 and Anna Bates ’17 are among the first to use the completed student space of the new library wing, which opened today as ongoing finish work continues.

Sweet Briar has received an occupancy permit for the completed portion — the first of three phases — of the new library construction.

Library director John Jaffe reports that final furnishings, exterior landscaping and touch up painting, cleaning and other finish work will be ongoing in the coming days but the spaces are now open to all.

“We will be receiving the vending machines for the Cafe Club shortly and the external patio is nearing completion,” he says.

The second phase of renovation is set to begin with the demolition of the 1967 addition. It will be replaced with a new north face extending along the original Ralph Adams Cram building, revealing the exterior details that were obscured by the added wing.

This phase also will add two levels of expanded student study and collaborative workspaces and is scheduled for summer 2014 completion.
