College Hosts 85th Annual Horse Show

Sweet Briar College will host its 85th Annual Horse Show from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 14 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 15 at Rogers Riding Center.

The show is one of the College’s longest-running open competitions. As a sanctioned Southwest Virginia Hunter/Jumper Association event, SWVHJA members may earn points toward year-end awards.

The Sweet Briar riding program also gives out several awards and trophies in conjunction with the show. They include:

  • The Fayette-Brown Challenge Trophy, given to the Sweet Briar rider who has demonstrated the best horsemanship and sportsmanship throughout the show.
  • The “Lt. Hatchell” Trophy, awarded to the winner of the special working hunter over fences class, where the brilliance and handiness of a field hunter is demonstrated.
  • The JMB Lewis Perpetual Trophy, awarded to the champion of the working hunters.
  • The Kiev’s Twilight Perpetual Trophy, awarded to the champion of the green hunter division.
  • In memory of Peggy Graziano, Sweet Briar Class of 1967, the Open Hunter Perpetual Trophy is given to the champion of the open hunter division. This trophy was donated by Abby Patterson Shultis, a 1966 graduate.
  • The Harriet Howell Rogers Challenge Trophy, awarded to the adult hunter division champion.
