Sweet Briar grad Lisa Aumiller ’96, owner of Mount Laurel, N.J.-based HousePaws Mobile Veterinary Service, has been named a 2017 Small Business Person of the Year. The award is given out annually by the U.S. Small Business Administration to winners from the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Aumiller studied biology at Sweet Briar. Her mobile vet service, launched in 2010 under the name “Dr. Lisa’s Mobile Veterinary Service,” seeks to offer “high quality veterinary service, at an affordable price, in the comforts of your own home,” according to her website.

Today, Aumiller works with 12 other veterinarians who focus on a holistic approach to veterinary medicine.

“I love meeting the pets and human companions in their own environment,” Aumiller told the Burlington County Times last year. “It adds depths to being a vet that I previously never experienced.”

While HousePaws is primarily a mobile service offering care to patients in their own homes, the company also has two traditional hospitals in New Jersey and plans to open a third location in Pennsylvania this month.

Aumiller and the other award winners have been invited to attend ceremonies in Washington, D.C., on April 30-May 1. Each will be honored with an individual award, followed by the announcement of the 2017 National Small Business Person of the Year.

HousePaws veterinarians make house calls to residences in several New Jersey and Pennsylvania counties.

“It is my honor and distinct pleasure to announce the 54 winners from across the U.S. and its territories,” said Linda McMahon, head of the U.S. Small Business Administration, in a press release.

“These small business owners define entrepreneurial spirit and best represent the 28 million small businesses that are the backbone and economic engine for today’s economy. I look forward to welcoming the winners to Washington next month when they are officially honored for their achievements.”

Each year since 1963, the president has issued a proclamation calling for the celebration of National Small Business Week. National Small Business Week is set as the first week in May, and this year the dates are April 30-May 6, with national events planned in Washington, D.C., New York City, Indianapolis, Dallas and Fresno, Calif.
