College, High School Students Gather at Sweet Briar for Leadership Conference

Sweet Briar College will host its 11th annual Student Leadership Conference from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Florence Elston Inn & Conference Center.

College students from around Virginia and local high school juniors and seniors are invited to hear from experts, professionals and leaders in numerous fields. Attendees also represent a variety of backgrounds, including newly elected or selected Sweet Briar student leaders.

The conference will follow a typical format, with concurrent breakout sessions led by guest speakers on various topics related to this year’s theme, “Leadership: Going Global.”

Saturday’s keynote speech, “The World on Their Shoulders: Women’s Growing Global Role,” will be delivered by 1969 SBC alumna Susan Scanlan. Scanlan is president of the Women’s Research and Education Institute and chair of the National Council of Women’s Organizations.

Breakout sessions include “African Women as Pioneers in Peacebuilding” by Bonnie Price Lofton of the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding; “Back in your Own Back Yard,” about global employment by Jo Ann Jonker Vaught, president of JA Vaught Consulting; “Cultural Concepts of Leadership and Power” by Richard LeBlanc, president and CEO of SEROPTYX Inc.; “Globalization and Cultural Literacy: A European Perspective” by Ciaran Buckley, visiting international scholar at Hampden-Sydney College; and “Leader Actions to Enhance Soldier Resiliency in Combat: Lessons from Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom” by Maj. Dave Cotting of Virginia Military Institute.
