The Sweet Briar College tennis team kicked off its fall season today with individual match play against cross-town ODAC rival Randolph College. Conditions were clear and sunny on the Vixen home courts, and the teams played in front of a large and supportive crowd of family and friends.
The match format was geared for individual play to allow for more than the traditional three doubles and six singles positions. Instead, there were nine singles matches played using the USTA two-out-of -three sets format, followed by two rounds of doubles consisting of the collegiate 8-game pro set.

Overall, the Vixens look strong and are off to a good start. The returning players utilized their strengths and experience today. They are joined by five skilled and ambitious first year players that give the Sweet Briar College team variety and depth.
Head tennis coach Teresa Boylan says of this year's team, "The amount of combined talent on the courts today of returners and first-year players is a great foundation for this team to make some strides in our conference (Old Dominion Athletic Conference). I'm sure each of our opponents has gotten stronger as well, so we cannot take anything for granted. That's what makes this a great conference, the amount of competition that we have. I know that our team will be able to go out there and fight for each point, and continue to improve. This is a group of hard-working and capable players, and I am very optimistic for a successful year and beyond."
The Vixens will host Central Virginia Community College on Saturday September 26 at 10:00 am, followed by the "Alumnae Social" at 1:00 pm during the celebration of Sweet Briar's Homecoming Weekend and Dedication of the new Fitness and Athletic Center.
