NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Virginia Sports Information Directors Association announced today that 213 collegiate student-athletes were honored for their performances both in the classroom and in competition as the organization selected the 2008-09 VaSID Academic All-State Team. Six Sweet Briar students were named to the All-State Team.

Each Virginia institution, including NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA and independents, had the opportunity to submit athletes to be honored.  To be eligible, student-athletes were required to have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better. The student must have achieved sophomore status, and he or she could not have been in the first season of competition at their current school. The following Sweet Briar students were among the 213 athletes honored:

• Megan Behrle is a 2009 graduate who played both lacrosse and field hockey. She was a starter at midfielder (lacrosse) from Manassas, Va. Megan also was president of Sweet Briar's Student Athlete Advisory Committee and received numerous honors for both academic and athletic achievements.
• Laura Jett '11 of Littleton, Colo., is a defensive specialist playing libero for the volleyball team.
• Kathryn "Kat" Alexander '11 of Marshall, N.C., plays soccer for the Vixens as a midfielder.
• Farmville resident Elizabeth "Ebie" Baker '11 heads into her third year as a member of the Sweet Briar tennis squad. She contributes throughout the lineup at both singles and doubles.
• Sarah Hall of Chester, who graduated in 2009, was a member of the Vixen swim team.
• Kelsey Smith '11 of Gainesville also represented the Vixen swim team.
