The Sweet Briar Vixens spring to life at home with a victory over the Peace College Pacers(Raleigh, N.C.) by a match score of 6-3.
The Vixens, just back from a spring training trip in Orlando, FL where they played five competitive matches in four days, felt deserving of today's win. "We went to Florida mainly to work on doubles tactics and match conditioning, which is the reason for us playing two matches in one day. We did have fun, but after the second day and fourth match, having traveled and played in summer-like conditions of heat and humidity, the players showed their toughness. I am extremely pleased with the improvements we made against our opponents in Florida. While the match scores may not indicate the progress I see, I look at it as an investment in our team's building process. Today's win is a direct benefit of those Florida matches," said head coach Teresa Boylan of her team. (Florida results listed below).
Starting out in doubles play were Virginia Edahl ('10/Charlotte, N.C.) and Ebie Baker ('11/Farmville, Va.) against the Pacer's team of Kerin and Cobian. Peace prevailed at first doubles by a set score of 8-3.
The Vixens played solid doubles at second and third and won decisively in both. The team of Ellen Reid ('12/Germanton, N.C.) and Leslie Polaski ('11/Amherst, Va.) worked well together for their 8-2 win. Third doubles goes to Stephanie Nance ('09/Moneta, Va.) and Jessica Draper ('11/Farmville, Va.) with a score of 8-3. Heading into singles, the Vixens are up 2-1 in the match.
Number one singles for Sweet Briar is Virginia Edahl, who won the first set handily over Alex Kerin of Peace, 6-2. Kerin fought back and although had the lead at 3-0 in the second set, Edahl worked at keeping the score close by battling to stay within one before losing the second set 5-7. Edahl controlled the match tie-breaker, winning 1-0 (5) to win a point for her team.
Although the points were long and consistent at two and three singles, the Peace Pacers won out at these two spots. Sophomore Ebie Baker (SBC) lost to Alejandra Cobian in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 and Vixen senior Stephanie Nance lost to Kristin Starnes also with scores of 6-4, 6-3.
