Sweet Briar, Va.—The Sweet Briar College lacrosse team played host to the Ferrum College Panthers yesterday at Babcock Field. The Vixen team chalks their second win for the 2009 season, beating the Panthers 20-5.
Head coach Hillary London said of her squad's strong start this spring, "The team is evenly distributed in the their scoring efforts, which creates numerous opportunities for us as a team. The balance is great because there's no pressure for one individual to be a dominant scorer; we have great scoring variations within each offensive play."
Highlights of yesterday's game speak to the evenly distributed scoring efforts by the Vixen offense. Sophomore Stewart Hulfish (Alexandria, Va.) led the scoring with five goals with two assists.
Vixen attack players D.J. Abernathy ('11/Annandale, Va.) and Meredith Newman ('09/Charlottesville, Va.) scored four goals each. Newman also contributed with three assists.
Senior Megan Behrle (Manassas, Va.) scored two goals and had three assists.
First-year players Sarah Winstead (Apex, N.C.) and Mallory Lengel (Great Mills, Md.) each had two goals. First-year attack player Ashley Salzman (Lusby, Md.) scored on an assist by Behrle.
Goalkeeper Laura Wolf is currently second in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) with a 79% save percentage. In yesterday's game against the Panthers, Wolf came away with 19 saves and helped hold Ferrum to only five goals.
The Vixens are now 2-0 overall and will travel to Trinity College on Friday. They will begin conference play on March 18 at Washington and Lee University.
