Sweet Briar, Va.–The Sweet Briar College lacrosse team hosted the College of Notre Dame of Maryland Gators for their first game of the 2009 season. The Vixens were victorious over the Gators by a score of 16-9.

Sophomore D.J. Abernathy (Annandale, Va.) scored a total five of the 16 Sweet Briar goals, and also had one assist. Midfielder Steward Hulfish ('11/Alexandria, Va.) scored four goals and had two assists.

Seniors Meghan Behrle (Manassas, Va.) and Meredith Newman (Charlottesville, Va.) both scored three goals each for the team win, with Newman also contributing three assists.

First-year player Sarah Winstead (Apex, N.C.) chipped in with a score to start out the second half for the Vixen squad.

Goalkeeper Laura Wolf ('11/Yorklyn, Del.) helped her team hold the Gators to nine with 12 saves at the goal.

The Vixens (1-0) will host Ferrum College (1-1) Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
