The Sweet Briar Vixen tennis team finished up their first road trip of their 2009 spring season playing Greensboro College (GC) at Bur-Mil Park in Greensboro, NC. In sunny, but at times very gusty conditions, the Vixens stayed tough and focused to take the match, 7-2.
The first doubles team of Co-captain Virginia Edahl (‘09/Charlotte, N.C.) and Krista Maldonado (‘12/Ennis, Texas) started with a strong win over GC’s team of Price and Lemmons, winning decisively 8-2.
The sophomore duo of Ebie Baker (Farmville, Va.) and Jessica Draper (Farmville, Va.) faced a steady team in Greensboro’s second doubles team of Allegro and Redd who won the set 8-5.
At third doubles, senior Stephanie Nance (Moneta, Va.) teamed up with first-year player Ellen Reid (Germanton, N.C.) and overwhelmed GC’s team of Cates and Brown by a score of 8-2.
The Vixens led the match 2-1 going into the singles, which was very competitive on both sides of the net. The additional natural elements of wind and sun had its effect on both teams and made for a very challenging battle on all six courts of singles.
Singles results are as follows:
The win to Virginia Edahl at first singles over Brittany Price, by a score of 7-6 (tb 8-6), 6-0;
Krista Maldonado came back from one set down to beat Michelle Lemmons for second singles, scores were 3-6, 6-4, 6-2;
At third singles, Ebie Baker played a long two-setter against GC’s Kate Allegro who came out ahead with scores of 6-3, 6-4;
Ellen Reid won court four singles decisively in straight sets over Heather Redd with scores 6-2, 6-4;
Stephanie Nance at fifth singles fought for the win against Brittany Cates, losing the first set 6-7 (tb 5-7), coming back and taking the second set 6-0, and won the deciding match tie-breaker 1-0 (5);
At court six singles, Jessica Draper outplayed Rachel Brown 6-2, 6-3.
Final Score: Sweet Briar College 7, Greensboro College 2
Sweet Briar College 2-0 overall, Conference: 0-0
