Sweet Briar held its ninth Brownie Science Try-It Day on Jan. 24, surpassing the milestone of hosting the 1,000th Brownie Girl Scout during the event.
According to Jill Granger, SBC professor of chemistry and the event’s faculty director, it was the largest one-day turnout for a Try-It Day at Sweet Briar, which co-sponsors the program with the Lynchburg-area chapter of Iota Sigma Pi. There were 137 Brownie Girl Scouts in attendance, along with 55 adult troop leaders and chaperones.
Ten faculty and student volunteers from Lynchburg and Randolph colleges and 24 Sweet Briar student volunteers staffed 29 activity tables set up in the Prothro dining room. The Brownies – Girl Scouts who are in the second and third grades – could earn up to seven “Try-Its,” the Brownie equivalent of a merit badge, in math and science.
Jessica Brenneman ’09 served as this year’s student director with help from co-director Caitlin Nealon ’10.
The Scout troops came from Forest, Charlottesville, Roanoke, Lynchburg, Staunton, Albemarle County, Altavista, Harrisonburg, Fluvanna County, Penn Laird, Amherst, Afton and Sweet Briar.
