Sweet Briar College's chamber orchestra, directed by Joe Nigro, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9 in the College's Memorial Chapel. Admission is free. The program includes works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Joseph Haydn, Saverio Mercadante and others.
Nigro predicted, "It will be the best concert of my three-year tenure" at Sweet Briar.
Twenty-five students will perform, including flutist Caroline King, a sophomore from Peachtree City, Ga. She will play the third movement — called "Rondo Russo" — of Mercadante's "Concerto in E Minor for Flute and Orchestra."
A double major in music and international affairs, King has been playing the flute since age 10. As a student at Woodward Academy in Atlanta, she won the John Philip Sousa award, which honors the top student in a high school band and recognizes superior musicianship and outstanding dedication.
Most recently, she performed in the College's Janet Lowrey Gager Community Concert Series.
"She's great," flute instructor Lynn Buck said, adding that she's been working with King for almost a year. "She's hardworking, she's nice, she's friendly, she rides horses [and] she plans to go to Junior Year in France next year. I'll miss her, but I'm very excited about that. She's just a great all-around student."
