Winston-Salem, N.C.—The Sweet Briar College Vixen volleyball squad traveled to Winston-Salem, N.C. for games against Trinity, Crown, Salem, and Pikeville Colleges all held at Salem College.
The first game paired Sweet Briar against Trinity College and the Vixens won in three by scores of 25-13, 25-13, and 25-11.
Performances contributing to the win include offensive play from sophomore Cassidy Jones (Rustburg, Va.) with 11 kills and six for first-year player Alexis Rukenbrod (Laurel, Md.). Defensively, there were nine digs from Ashley Winters (‘11/Mechanicsville, Va.), and 16 assists from teammate Brooke Moody (‘11/Concord, Va.). The overall team contribution was a winning combination.
Game two for Sweet Briar College was an exciting match-up against the host school Salem College. The Vixens rallied in this 5-set match but the Spirits got the better of them winning 3-2 with scores of 25-14, 18-25, 23-25, 25-19, and the final game of 8-15 going to Salem.
Team highlights include 16 kills for Cassidy Jones and nine for Dori Rucker (‘09/Virginia Beach, Va.). Ashley Winters contributed with 23 digs and Alexis Rukenbrod and Brooke Moody each with team assists of 19 and 16 respectively.
The third game of the afternoon was against Crown College and the Vixens were victorious in three games with scores of 25-14, 25-16, and 25-16. Vixen teammates Jones had 12 kills and 10 digs, Ashley Winters with nine kills and 19 digs, and first-year player Chadahn Watson (Sacramento, Ca.) with 8 and 12 digs. The team total was 65 digs against Crown.
The fourth game to conclude the afternoon’s competition was against Pikeville College and the Vixens lost in three. Scores were 11-25, 14-25, and 13-25
