Sweet Briar College’s Business Management Lab will host “Cooking for the Cure,” a chili cook-off, at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16 on the Upper Quad. The event will raise breast cancer awareness and benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure — Richmond affiliate.
The Management Lab is a class of about 25 students who put on six different events each semester. The students run each event as if it was a business, and each event group has an event planner, a marketing officer, a donations officer and an accountant.
Each class also selects a charity to benefit from its efforts. This semester, the students are working with Susan G. Komen for the Cure to inform the Sweet Briar community and the public about breast cancer and how they can help.
At the chili cook-off, chefs will cook two or more gallons of their favorite chili recipe and share them with the public. The competition is open to Sweet Briar College students, faculty and staff, as well as people from the surrounding community.
There will be a division for professionals and two divisions for amateurs, depending on whether they want to cook on or off site. The entry fee for professionals is $30 and entry for on-site and off-site cookers is $20 and $10, respectively. Deadline for registration is Sunday, Nov. 2.
Entrants are asked to bring their own propane or camp stoves.
Prizes will include trophies, gift baskets, gift certificates and Sweet Briar-related items. Entrance into the event is $3 for children, $5 for the Sweet Briar community and $8 for the general public.
In case of rain, the event will be held in Josey Dining Room. For more information or to register to compete, e-mail the event organizers at sbcchilicookoff08@gmail.com.
