Sweet Briar College opened their 2008-09 Volleyball season at the Moravian Tournament in Pennsylvania on August 29th and 30th. The Vixens went 2-2 at the tournament, and sophomore Laura Jett (Littleton, CO) was named to the All-Tournament Team following outstanding play in all four games. Jett led the team total for defensive digs, having a cummulative total of 40 for the tournament.
The Vixens met up with Ithaca College for their first match of the tournament, falling 0-3 with scores of 4-25, 22-25, 21-25.
The Sweet Briar team then met up with Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. Scores were 14-25, 17-25, and 15-25 in favor of Stockton College winning 0-3. Laura Jett had a tournament game high of 13 digs against Stockton.
Play on day two brought together Sweet Briar College (0-2) and Alvernia College (0-3) of Reading, PA. Laura Jett contributed 11 defensive saves while Sweet Briar Sophomore Ashley Winters (Mechanicsville, VA)had a Sweet Briar tournament high of 20 digs in this game against Alvernia. This Vixen win was led by Brooke Moody, a sophomore from Concord, VA, with 20 service aces for a 3-0 victory over Alvernia College. Set scores were 25-18, 25-13, and 25-16.
The fourth and final game of the tournament matched Sweet Briar College (1-2) against Centenary College (0-3)from Hackettstown, NJ. The Vixen teammates Jett and Moody contributed 10 digs each, while sophomore Cassidy Jones (Rustburg, VA) led the team with 11 kills for a Sweet Briar College 3-0 win. Set scores for the fourth and final game of this tournament were 25-17, 25-10, and 25-23.
The Sweet Briar Vixens return to their home court at Williams Gymnasium on Wednesday, September 3 to face Southern Virginia University at 6:30 pm.
