The ninth-seeded Sweet Briar College Vixens suffered a 6-3 loss at the hands of the eighth-seeded Guilford College Quakers on Friday morning as action got underway at the 2008 ODAC Women’s Tennis Championships, hosted by Sweet Briar.

Vixens sophomore Virginia Edahl (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) and senior Caroline Byrd (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) stretched their win streaks to five in singles as both picked up wins over Guilford. Edahl won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1, while Byrd took her match at No. 2 6-2, 6-4.

Edahl and Byrd collected Sweet Briar’s first win of the match in doubles play, as the two captured their No. 1 match 8-4. The win was the ninth of the season for Edahl and Byrd, who currently hold a 9-4 record at No. 1 doubles this season.

Sweet Briar continues play in the tournament tomorrow at 10 a.m.
