Sweet Briar softball capped off the 2008 season with a sweep of visiting Randolph College on Sunday afternoon. With the two conference wins, Sweet Briar finishes its season 11-26 overall and 4-14 in the ODAC.
Strong hitting and the long ball helped lead the Vixens to the sweep as they took game one 13-5 and game two 10-8.
The Vixens used two big innings to win game one, putting up five-spots in the second and third innings. Senior Krystal Ellis (Rustburg, Va./Rustburg) lead off the second inning with a walk and moved into scoring position on a double from first-year Jordan Pugh (Afton, Va./Nelson Co.). Ellis and Pugh both came home on a double from sophomore Blair Mullally (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood).
Mullally eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from first-year Amey Landreth (Disputanta, Va./Prince George). A double to left field by senior Brittney Berry (Tappahannock, Va./Essex) plated Sweet Briar’s fourth and fifth runs of the inning.
Berry added three more RBIs in the third inning with her third home run of the season. She finished 2-for-4 at the plate with 5 RBIs. Also producing for the Vixens was right fielder Mullally who went a perfect 2-for-2 in game one with four RBIs and three runs scored.
The Vixens had 15 hits in the win to give first-year Megan Franklin (Powhatan, Va./Blessed Sacrament Huguenot) her seventh win of the season.
The bats kept rolling for Sweet Briar in the second game as the Vixens batted around in the first inning.
The home half of the first started with a two walks. Both came around to score on a double to left from senior Beth Anderson (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin), followed by three straight singles, which plated two more runs.
After a walk and a fielder’s choice, Landreth knocked a single to left to bring home the fifth run, before Berry belted a two-out grand slam to hand the Vixens a 9-1 lead in the first inning.
Randolph mounted a comeback in the middle innings scoring two in the third, three in the fourth and two in the sixth before Franklin shutdown the WildCats in order in the seventh inning to preserve the win.
Franklin came in, in relief for starter Anna Newberg who went four innings for the win.

Berry had a career day with the bat in her final two collegiate games. She finished the twinbill 3-for-8 with two home runs, nine RBIs and three runs scored.
Berry and fellow seniors Ellis and Anderson were honored prior to the start of today’s game.
