EMORY, Va. — First-year Jordan Pugh’s (Afton, Va./Nelson Co.) game-winning hit in the top of the eighth inning on Saturday helped Sweet Briar softball take one of two from host Emory & Henry College. The Vixens captured game one 5-4 in extra innings. Game two went to the Wasps 6-2.
Pugh was 1-for-3 in game one. Junior Melissa Viar (Madison Heights, Va./Amherst Co.) and first-year Ellie Witt (Salem, Va./Northside) each knocked two hits in the game. Viar collected two singles in three at-bats, Witt had a single and a double in four visits to the plate.
Sweet Briar plated five runs on eight hits for the win. First-year pitcher Megan Franklin (Powhatan, Va./Blessed Sacrament Huguenot) fanned four Wasps to earn her sixth win in the circle.
First-year pitcher Anna Newberg (New Britain, Conn./New Britain) surrendered just four hits in game two, but suffered the loss.
First-year Amey Landreth (Disputanta, Va./Prince George) was 2-for-4 in the second game of the twin bill. Senior catcher Brittney Berry (Tappahannock, Va./Essex) knocked her second home run of the season.
Sweet Briar is on the road again on Tuesday. The team is slated to travel to Bridgewater College for a 4 p.m. conference doubleheader.
