Sweet Briar lacrosse scored four unanswered goals in the final nine minutes of play Saturday afternoon to edge visiting Bridgewater College 11-10 in ODAC action. The conference win is the first of the season for the 4-6 Vixens.
The game was tied seven times and the lead switched hands six times as both teams matched each other goal for goal.
Bridgewater jumped on the board first in the third minute, only to be answered 13 seconds later by junior Meredith Newman (Charlottesville, Va./Tandem), who tied the game at 1-1 and then handed her team an early 2-1 lead with goals in the third and fifth minutes.
The Eagles responded with two of their own before Newman once again tied the game at 3-3.
The final goal of the half was netted by Bridgewater with nine minutes remaining and the Eagles held off the Vixen attack late in the half to hold the slim 4-3 lead at the break.
It was Sweet Briar’s turn to score first in the second half, as first-year Stewart Hulfish (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton) and senior Ellie Donahue (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) scored back-to-back goals.
The Eagles then reeled off three straight goals for their largest lead of the game at 7-5, only to be answered with two straight goals from Donahue and Hulfish to bring the game back to a tie.
Bridgewater tied its largest lead of the game in the 51st minute before Sweet Briar netted four straight for the win. Junior Megan Behrle (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) connected on a pass from Newman with just over eight minutes to play to kick-start the comeback. Behrle followed with her second goal less than 30 seconds later to tie the game at 9-9.

Newman completed the scoring run with a free-position goal in the 56th minute and the game-winner with 2:15 to play. She finished with five goals and two assists. Hulfish, Behrle and Donahue each had two apiece.
Vixen goalie sophomore Lisa Weisbrich (West Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) turned back 10 in the game, including two in the final minutes of play to enable Sweet Briar to pull ahead.
The Eagles were lead by Sarah Wade with three goals and two assists. Sophomore keeper Colleen Schwind picked up 14 saves.
Sweet Briar hits the road on Wednesday for its final road contest of the regular season. The Vixens take on Hollins University at 4:30 p.m.
