SWEET BRIAR, Va. — Sweet Briar softball worked a split with visiting Mary Baldwin College on Sunday as the two teams met in a non-conference doubleheader. Game one went to the Vixens 9-0 while game two was won by the Squirrels 13-10.
The Vixens captured game one in six innings thanks to a game-ending three-run home run by first-year Ellie Witt (Salem, Va./Northside). Witt’s home run capped a four-hit, five-run inning for Sweet Briar.
The home half of the sixth began with first-year Amey Landreth (Disputanta, Va./Prince George), senior Brittney Berry (Tappahannock, Va./Essex) and junior Melissa Viar (Madison Heights, Va./Amherst County) picked up back-to-back singles with one out. Landreth then scored on a wild pitch, followed by a fielder’s choice from senior Beth Anderson (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) to plate Berry. Viar and Anderson came home on Witt’s home run.
Sweet Briar scored a run in every inning of game one except inning two. Witt was 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs and three runs scored. Berry was a perfect 4-for-4.
First-year pitcher Megan Franklin (Powhatan, Va./Blessed Sacrament Huguenot) was the beneficiary of the runs. She scattered five hits in six innings for the shutout win.
The two teams played a wild one in game two with 23 runners crossing the plate. Mary Baldwin scored two in each of the first two innings, only to see their lead erased by Sweet Briar, who pushed across four in the bottom of the second.
Errors in the field by the Squirrels led to a six-run third inning by Sweet Briar to jump ahead 10-4. But, Mary Baldwin fought back, pushing across three in the fourth and three in the fifth to tie the game at 10-10 before a three-run home run from Jessica Brown in the seventh inning broke the tie and gave the Squirrels the win.
Witt added three hits in game two to finish the day 6-for-8. Viar and Anderson were 2-for-4 and 2-for-3, respecitively with two RBIs each. Sophomore pitcher Nikki Taylor (Wendell, N.C./East Wake) picked up three hits with the bat and scored two runs.
Sweet Briar, now 7-14 overall, travels to Shenandoah on Wednesday. The doubleheader gets underway at 5 p.m.
