Visiting Chowan University came from behind Sunday to take game two in extra innings and the non-conference doubleheader by scores of 3-0 and 6-5. The losses push Sweet Briar’s record to 0-6 on the young season.
Sweet Briar jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in game two with a four-run, five-hit first inning. The offense started with a walk from junior Melissa Viar (Madison Heights, Va./Amherst County). She then stole second and advanced to third on senior Beth Anderson's (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) single.
Viar came around to score Sweet Briar's first run on a single from first-year Amey Landreth (Disputanta, Va./Prince George). Back-to-back singles from sophomore Blair Mullally (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) and first-year Ellie Witt (Salem, Va./Northside) brought home Anderson and Landreth.
The Hawks came from behind in the late innings to score one run in the top of the fifth and two in the sixth to tie the game at 4-4 and force the extra frames.
In the extra frame, Chowan scored two unearned runs to take a 6-4 lead. The Vixens rallied to bring the game to 6-5 but were unable to bring home the tying run.
Landreth was 3-for-4 at the plate for the Vixens in game two. She notch two singles and a double, scored a run, and picked up an RBI. Mullally and Witt each finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI.
First-year pitcher Megan Franklin (Powhatan, Va./Blessed Sacrament Huguenot) took the loss in relief for the Vixens. She surrendered two unearned runs to the Hawks in the eighth inning.
Franklin started the doubleheader with a complete-game, seven-strikeout performance in the circle in game one.
