RALEIGH, N.C. — Sweet Briar softball continued its opening weekend in Raleigh on Sunday, taking on Peace College in non-conference action. The Vixens picked up 15 hits in the doubleheader but were unable to topple the Pacers, falling by scores of 4-1 and 10-2 in the two games.
Sweet Briar scored in their first at bat in both contests. In game one, senior Krystal Ellis (Rustburg, Va./Rustburg) lead off with a single. She was replaced on the bases by junior Melissa Viar (Madison Heights, Va./Amherst County) who reached on a fielder’s choice. Viar then advanced on a groundout from first-year Amey Landreth (Disputanta, Va./Prince George) and came home to score as senior Brittney Berry (Tappahannock, Va./Essex) reached on an error.
Game two’s offense also began with Ellis. She doubled in the first inning, followed by a single from Viar. An RBI groundout from Landreth scored Ellis. Viar then scored Sweet Briar’s second run on a single by Berry.
The Vixens open their home schedule next weekend. Sweet Briar is slated to host Chowan University at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
