RALEIGH, N.C. — Sweet Briar softball dropped two close contests Saturday as the Vixens opened their season on the road against non-conference Meredith College.
Sweet Briar matched Meredith frame for frame through seven innings before a walk-off home run from the Avenging Angels handed Sweet Briar the tough 9-7 loss in game one.
The Vixens were led at the plate by starting pitcher sophomore Nikki Taylor (Wendell, N.C./East Wake) who was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Sophomore Blair Mullally (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) and first-year Jordan Pugh (Afton, Va./Nelson County) also picked up RBIs for the Vixens. Mullally went 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBI. Pugh was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.
Sweet Briar also came up on the short end in game two, falling 4-2. Tayor and Mullally once again accounted for the Vixen runs. Each went 1-for-3 in the game with one RBI.
Taylor finished the twin bill 3-for-7 with three RBIs. Senior Krystal Ellis (Rustburg, Va./Rustburg) was 3-for-5 on the day with three walks.
Sweet Briar looks to rebound tomorrow as the team remains in Raleigh to face Peace College at 1 p.m.
