Junior Meredith Newman’s (Charlottesville, Va./Tandem) five goals Saturday helped Sweet Briar lacrosse open its 2008 campaign in winning fashion. The Vixens downed visiting Waynesburg University 19-1 in the non-conference opener.
A balanced attack in the first half pushed Sweet Briar out to a 12-0 lead at the break. Eight different Vixens found the net in the half with only four unassisted goals. Offensive leaders in the first frame were first-year D.J. Abernathy (Annandale, Va./W.T. Woodson), first-year Stewart Hulfish (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton), Newman and senior Ellie Donahue (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) with two tallies apiece.
It was more of the same in the second half as Newman netted her third and fourth goals of the game at 34:40 and 35:51 to expand the lead to 14. The Yellow Jackets got one back in the 50th minute, erasing the shutout with a goal from sophomore Heather Quinlisk.
