Two more school records fell Sunday evening as swimming concluded at the 2008 ODAC/Atlantic States Championships in Radford, Va. The Vixens finished third overall with 454 points and third among ODAC schools with 526 points.
First-year Melissa Simpson (Madison Heights, Va./Amherst County) set her fourth school record of the weekend in the 200 Y. backstroke. She touched second in the event with a time of 2:14.24, erasing the record she set in January by nearly three seconds.
Also placing in the top-eight of the 200 Y. backstroke were Sam Benito ’11 (Germany/Ramstein American) in fifth place with a season-best 2:27.15 and Jenn Milby ’08 (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) in sixth place with a time of 2:28.25.
Sweet Briar had five other top-eight finishes on the night. In the 1650 Y. freestyle, Hannah Hesser ’10 (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) took second with a season-best time of 18:31.81. Stephanie Perks '09 (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier)was seventh-best in the 100 Y. freestyle, swimming the event in 58:14.
Hayley Hill ’10 (Southampton, Bermuda/Bermuda School for Girls) took sixth in the 200 Y. breaststroke (2:43.18) and Allison Stanberry ’11 (Nashville, Tenn./Christ Presbyterian) captured seventh in the final individual event of the night, the 200 Y. butterfly, with a lifetime-best time of 2:30.41.
The night and the meet ended with the ninth school record of the season being broken as Vixens Hesser, Perks, Tori Marshall ’10 (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham), and Simpson swam a season-best and new school record time of 3:48.50 in the 400 Y. freestyle relay. The previous record of 3:52.55 was set in March of 1985.
This weekend saw five school records, 12 season bests and six lifetime bests swum by the Vixens, who posted a 12-2 overall record this season and a 5-2 mark in the conference.
Head coach Alex Kuhn was honored at the meet as the ODAC coach of the year.
Hannah Hesser '10
Top performers this weekend for Sweet Briar were Hesser and Simpson. Hesser captured two second-place finishes and five third-place finishes. She swam a lifetime best in the 100 Y. butterfly and was a member of two record-breaking relay teams.
Melissa Simpson '11
Simpson joined Hesser on both record-breaking relays, and set three of her own school records. The freshman also captured one second-place finish and six third-place finishes for Sweet Briar in her first taste of the ODAC/Atlantic States meet.
