Sweet Briar hockey lost a heartbreaker Sunday, surrendering a penalty corner goal five minutes into the first overtime period to fall to visiting Transylvania University by a score of 4-3.
The Vixens twice jumped out to a lead, leading at 2-0 and then again at 3-2, only to see the Pioneers add another tally to the board. Two of Sweet Briar’s three goals came in the first frame as junior Sarah Goldstein (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) connected on a pass from junior Abby Adkins (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk) to put Sweet Briar ahead 1-0 at 14:24. Molly McGonegle ’10 (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd E. Kellam) followed three minutes later with a penalty corner goal off a feed from junior Blair Sutton (Richmond, Va./Steward) to give the Vixens a 2-0 lead.

Transylvania answered, jumping on the board at 29:27 to end the first half with the Vixens leading 2-1. The Pioneers then went on to tie the game at two-all on a goal in the 42nd minute. The tie lasted 13 minutes before McGonegle and Sutton teamed for their second penalty corner goal of the game. McGongele’s second goal gave Sweet Briar its second lead of the game with 15 to play.
The lead lasted until the 58th minute when Transy’s Annie Donalan scored her second of three goals in the game to retie the game at three-all and eventually send the game into overtime.
In the overtime period, Sweet Briar had several scoring opportunities before a defensive stop by Transylvania led to a Pioneer attack and an eventual penalty corner at 74:25. Donalan scored the game-winner off the corner, completing her hat-trick.
Sweet Briar had defended well against the penalty corner before the game-winning goal. The Vixens defended eight corners in the second half, including six down the stretch with the game tied. Vixen goalie senior Cat Cox (Prince Frederick, Md./Calverton) was key in the Vixen defense. She turned back 13 shots in the second half and two in the overtime period to finish with 20 for the game.
The non-conference loss moves Sweet Briar to 2-11 overall for the season. The Vixens’ next game is Tuesday as the team travels to Fredericksburg to face the University of Mary Washington at 4 p.m.
