WINCHESTER — Sweet Briar volleyball walked away with a nail-biting win on Thursday, handing host Shenandoah University a 3-2 loss in non-conference action. The Vixens took the match by a score of 30-19, 9-30, 30-17, 31-33, 15-13.

Junior attacker Dori Rucker (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) knocked down 10 kills in 24 attempts while committing zero errors in the five games. Cassidy Jones ’11 (Rustburg, Va./Rustburg) added a team-best 20 kills at the net while Ashley Winters ’11 (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) and Meagan Bell ’09 (Madison Heights, Va./Amherst County) accounted for 11 kills apiece. Sweet Briar’s strong presence at the net led to 44 assists from first-year setter Lauren Foster (Evington, Va./Rustburg).
Sweet Briar also defended the Hornet hitters well in the match. Laura Jett collected 20 digs, followed by 16 from Foster and Bell, and 12 from Winters.
The Vixens venture back into conference play this weekend. The team travels to Virginia Beach on Saturday for an afternoon tri-match at Virginia Wesleyan. Sweet Briar is slated to take on the Marlins at 3 p.m., followed by a 5 p.m. contest with non-conference Meredith.
