ASHLAND — Sweet Briar soccer held a 1-1 tie on the road at Randolph-Macon College Wednesday, before surrendering a late goal to drop the conference game 2-1.
Thanks to tough defensive play by the Vixens and 10 saves from keeper Kristen Johnson (Federal Way, Wash./Decatur), Sweet Briar found itself behind just 1-0 at halftime despite defending 14 shots from Macon in the half.
In the second frame, the Vixens switched to the offensive as first-year Kat Alexander (Marshall, N.C./Carolina Day) found the back of the net with a shot from outside the box to tie the game at one-all in the 53rd minute. Sweet Briar held the Yellow Jackets at bay for the next 34 minutes before surrounding a goal with just over three minutes on the clock.
Sweet Briar returns home on Saturday to take on Randolph College at 1 p.m.
