Sophomore Molly McGonegle (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd Kellam) scored the eventual game-winner Saturday as the Vixens defeated visiting Shenandoah University 3-2 in non-conference field hockey action. The win moves Sweet Briar’s overall record to 2-4, while the Hornets fall to 0-4.
First-year Amey Landreth (Disputanta, Va./Yorktown) gave Sweet Briar an early 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal in the 15th minute. Shenandoah answered 20 minutes later with a goal from Meggie Dutill to tie the game at one-all heading into the break.
Sweet Briar pulled ahead for good in the second half on goals from Lindsay Eneguess ’11 (Peterborough, N.H./Contoocook Valley) and McGonegle. Junior Abby Adkins (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk) picked up the assist on McGonegle’s tally. The Hornets added a late goal to make the game close at 3-2 but the Vixens held on for the win.
Sweet Briar is slated to take on the Alumnae tomorrow in the annual Homecoming Alumnae Game. The Vixens next contest is Sept. 30 at Hood College.
